Frankston Apartments

As architects, one of our primary challenges is ensuring the financial viability of every project we undertake. For this project, we collaborated closely with the Council to successfully navigate the challenging approval process.  Our objective was to design a building with dual street frontages that optimally utilise the 620 m2 site despite significant restrictions and limitations. This project is an excellent example of how we can be tested in this space and how we ensured the brief and outcome were aligned through creative thinking and planning. The project's modern yet refined appearance and efficient floor layout have secured the necessary feasibility for its progress.

The design accommodated eight apartments across three levels, featuring a mix of one and two bedrooms to cater to diverse markets. Each apartment has been designed specifically for the site, carefully considering views, aspects, ventilation, and natural light. The ground floor apartments are designed with private terraces with gardens and access from the street, creating homes that feel like townhouses rather than apartments. The first-floor apartments feature spacious balconies, offering residents extra outdoor living space, while the top floor has two luxurious penthouse apartments with spacious balconies offering stunning suburban views.

At the back of the building lies a private courtyard within a garden surrounded by a beautiful landscape that offers a quiet and secluded space for the residents. With benches and shaded areas, it's a perfect spot for neighbours to come together, whether it's for a casual chat, a morning coffee, or a small community event. This space encourages moments of relaxation and promotes a strong sense of community among those who live in the building.

The apartment building is designed to engage with the street and attract the target market with its unique façade. The use of aluminium screening and materials such as brick, modern panels and metal cladding create an appealing external aesthetic. Additionally, integrated planters and green screens are used throughout the site and building which extend across the private open spaces and up to the roof line. These features help to reduce noise, provide shade from the sun, and add visual interest. The entry is defined by a large concrete vertical element that creates articulation on the façade and clearly marks the entrance.

The apartment building's modern design not only meets the residents' needs but also enhances the surrounding community.
